House Science Committee Reports out AFG / SAFER Reauthorization House Appropriations Committee marks up FY 2024 DHS Appropriations Bill

Reauthorization

On June 21st, the House Science, Space and Technology committee reported out H.R. 4090, the Fire Grants and Safety Act of 2023 on a 29-0 unanimous vote.

The bill proposes a five-year reauthorization for the AFG and SAFER programs, with an annual authorization funding level of $750 million for five fiscal years, 2024 through FY 2028. The sunset clause for AFG and SAFER extends to 2030.

The USFA is authorized at $95 million for each of the fiscal years 2024 through 2028.

Original bipartisan co-sponsors of the bill included Rep. Tom Kean, (R-NJ) and Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ).

The bill now awaits floor action, but when it will be considered is unknown. The House bill varies slightly from the Senate–passed reauthorization which would extend AFG and SAFER through FY 2030 with a 2032 sunset provision.
